McCall’s Shibori Summer Dress

M6954 front sideI’ve seen various shibori dyed fabrics this summer, and I couldn’t resist picking up a couple yards of this rayon fabric from Joann. It has great drape, and I found it to be fairly easy to sew with compared to some other rayons.

I initially planned to make a tunic dress similar to this ELVI dress from Nordstrom, but when I came across M6954, I knew it would be perfect for this fabric. I love the simple style and the various hemline options.

I made size Small in view C without any modifications. I generally shorten patterns by a couple of inches at the waist since I’m petite, but I wanted the back to hang a little longer for a more dramatic effect. The pattern calls for bias binding along the neckline and armscye, but you could easily sew a full or partial lining for a cleaner finish. There are just four pattern pieces (two fronts and two backs) to sew, so it’s great for a beginner or when you want a nice, easy sew.

I love how comfortable and easy this dress is to wear; I only wish I made it sooner! So, what’s on your cutting table?
